We want you to have a fly fishing experience like never before in your life

get to know us

We are the kind who want to know the world with a fishing rod in our hands

The kind of people who fantasize about the next river to be discovered.

The kind of people who love sunrises, good food and good fishing.

this is our story

My name is Santiago Derendinger, I’m a fishing nut, and I’m the founder of Kuntur Fly Fishing.

But I didn’t always work with the sport I love.

Fishing has been part of my life ever since I was a child. I grew up in Bariloche, Patagonia, and almost everyone in my family was a fly fisherman.

For as long as I can remember, practically every weekend during the fishing season, my life was close to the water and fishing. Years went by and life took me to live in the Northwest of Argentina, specifically in Catamarca. As I moved away from the rivers and lakes of Patagonia, I also moved away from fishing. I dedicated the next 12 or 13 years to work in a regular business and fishing disappeared from my life.

However, my passion for this sport never disappeared.

One day I heard that in Catamarca, more than 1000 kilometers away from my hometown, there were trouts. I couldn’t get this thougth out of my head. One night I woke up at 5 in the morning, got up, woke up my brother and told him we were going fishing.

He looked at me a bit confused and said:

What? What’s wrong with you? Are you crazy? It’s 5 a.m!

I insisted and he got up. We looked for my dad’s old equipment, got into the car and drove to the river. We were there for a couple of hours without success until suddenly, the first trout appeared.

At that moment, I traveled back in time to my childhood. It was as if I had never stopped fishing. From that moment until now, I dedicated myself uninterruptedly to learning.

I trained for years with the best instructors in Argentina and I gradually realized that what I wanted was to dedicate myself 100% to the activity. That’s how I graduated as an instructor and guide. Little by little I began to give classes and guide, and I made fishing my second economic income.

I had a construction company in which I was doing very well, but I cared less and less about it and more about dedicating myself to fishing as a way of life. So one good day, I closed the company and formed Kuntur Fly Fishing. And here I am!

4 years later, we have taken fishermen from all over the world to tour Argentina with a fishing rod.

On this journey, I met fishing women who joined the team. We have miles travelled together, and a digital space to not miss each other when we're apart.

Yes, we have a Facebook group, but it is a lot more than that. This beautiful space was created with the desire to share our passion: fly fishing.

Here we are comrades and we share our adventures, our personal growth, techniques, doubts, photos, videos and anecdotes from women all over the world. Above all, we can become sisters, because we are a lot more than we can imagine.

Creating Kuntur was just the beggining

The name Kuntur means Condor in the Quechua language and I thought it fit us very well, specially because of the places where we fish at. The Kuntur project was born about 4 years ago from the idea of approaching fishing expeditions from another perspective.

I truly a fan of experiences that blow your mind.

And was how, one good day, one of my crazy ideas saw the light

I somehow managed to get an assistance truck from the Dakar Rally, and turned it into a Mobile Lodge. That two-story, 9-ton beast had to go out and travel new roads.

But I didn’t want just a nice vehicle.

I had to think about destinations. I wanted something never seen before, something surprising. «Something that will blow your mind,» I thought to myself.

I started to investigate and I focused on the Andes, specifically on Antofagasta de la Sierra in the middle of the Puna, in the province of Catamarca. I had heard comments that 4000 meters above sea level, there were rivers with excellent trout fishing. So I organized a trip, loaded my equipment and left in search of that dream.

Today our Dakar Rally Truck expeditions have achieved international fame, and we are happy to be able to share this incredible experience.
